greggallman_southernblood Gregg Allman
Southern Blood

Gregg Allman’s Southern Blood serves as a remarkable final testament from an artist whose contributions have truly shaped rock & roll throughout the past four decades. Recorded in Muscle Shoals where Duane Allman and the earliest seeds of the Allman Brothers Band were sown, Southern Blood is among the most uniquely personal of the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer’s career. This emotionally expansive collection of songs written by friends and favorite artists including Jackson Browne, Willie Dixon, Jerry Garcia & Robert Hunter, Lowell George and Spooner Oldham & Dan Penn serves as a salutary farewell to his legion of devoted fans and admirers.

Roll With The Punches

Van Morrison’s 37th studio album sees him simultaneously hand-picking a selection of rhythm and blues classics (by the likes of Bo Diddley, Mose Allison, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Lightnin’ Hopkins among others) and recording a set of new self-written songs. It’s an album that features raw, intimate interpretations of some of the cornerstones of rock’n’roll alongside five new numbers by one of our most consistently brilliant recording artists. Roll With The Punches was produced by Van Morrison and recorded with an incredible team of studio collaborators including Chris Farlowe, Georgie Fame, Jeff Beck, Paul Jones and Jason Rebello.

rogerwaters_isthisthelifewereallywant Roger Waters
Is This The Life We Really Want?

Roger Waters, the creative power and songwriting force behind Pink Floyd, presents his first rock album in 25 years. Waters’ last studio album, 1992’s Amused To Death, was a prescient study of popular culture, exploring the power of television in the era of the First Gulf War. This long-awaited follow-up, Is This The Life We Really Want?, is an unflinching commentary on the modern world and uncertain times, and a natural successor to such classic Pink Floyd albums as Animals and The Wall.

brucecockburn_boneonbone Bruce Cockburn
Bone On Bone

Bone On Bone is veteran Canadian singer/songwriter Bruce Cockburn’s first album since 2011’s Small Source Of Comfort. “There have been so many times in my life when an invitation has come from somewhere… The cosmos… The divine…,” says Cockburn, “to step out of the familiar into something new. I’ve found it’s best to listen for and follow these promptings. The song is really about that. You can stay with what you know or you can pack your bag and go where you’re called, even if it seems weird – even if you can’t see why or where you’ll end up.”

neilyoung_hitchhiker Neil Young
Hitchhiker

Hitchhiker is a previously unreleased 10-track acoustic solo album recorded in Malibu, CA at Indigo Studio in 1976. Recorded between Zuma and American Stars and Bars as a solo album in a single session, the resultant performances are truly breathtaking and passionate. The simplicity of a single voice and guitar captured here is as pure and powerful as it gets. When the Hitchhiker album was recorded, none of the included songs had ever been released and many of the performances of the songs were the first ever. This is truly an album of original performances.

theblindboysofalabama_almosthome The Blind Boys of Alabama
Almost Home

Grown out of the recognition that the band’s original lineup is down to just two remaining survivors, Clarence Fountain and Jimmy Carter, Almost Home recounts the band’s remarkable journey, primarily through original songs written for them by an outstanding collection of artists including Valerie June, the North Mississippi Allstars, Phil Cook, John Leventhal, Marc Cohn, and Ruthie Foster among others. The record blends the sacred and secular, the traditional and innovative, the past and present.

georgethorogood_partyofone George Thorogood
Party of One

The bad-to-the-bone icon has returned home to Rounder Records to release the first solo record of his 40+ year career. Party Of One is Thorogood’s long-awaited tribute to the artists that shaped his musical consciousness. The album sees Thorogood covering blues masters such as Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker, and Elmore James, as well as other legends, including The Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, and Bob Dylan. The primarily acoustic instrumentation is performed entirely by Thorogood live in the studio with minimal overdubs. As Thorogood himself says, “This record is what I was, what I am, and what I always will be.”

savoybrown_witchyfeelin Savoy Brown
Witchy Feelin’

Blues is not for the faint-hearted. Since the genre first drew breath, it’s greatest practitioners have embraced the darkness, spinning tales of hardship and death, hellhounds and devilry. “Blues has always dealt with themes of the Devil, witchcraft and so forth, and I’ve always written along those lines,” says Savoy Brown’s iconic leader Kim Simmonds. From the thrillingly brittle guitar riff that opens Why Did You Hoodoo Me, we are in the hands of a master, with Simmonds reigniting the seismic vocals and searing fretwork that established Savoy Brown as linchpins of the ’60s British blues boom. “I tried to write songs that had a personal point of view yet can be relatable to everyone.”

They’ll understand the songs. I hope they like them as well. I’m doing something different than I’ve ever done before. It’s a step forward for me. And considering how long I’ve been doing this, I’m kinda proud of that.”

anamericantroubadour_steveforbert Various Artists
An American Troubadour: The Songs of Steve Forbert

For over 35 years Steve Forbert has crisscrossed the nation as a traveling musician making a living singing and performing on the road. Soon lightning struck and the boy from Meridian, Mississippi was in the big-time. With a hit debut record, Steve was on the road and playing in front of thousands. As life unfolded and the times changed, Steve continued to stay true to his inner voice. Through his words and music he continued to poetically document his life’s journey. Some say that Steve is too young to have a “tribute;” this project is not a tribute but rather its purpose is to recognize the spirit of the troubadour in all of those artists who follow their life’s path like Steve with purpose and passion.

dannyokeefe_home Danny O’Keefe
Home

In the 1970’s, Danny O’Keefe put out a string of albums that cemented his reputation as being among the best songwriters of his generation. These days, casual fans know him best for his Top Ten hit “Good Time Charlie’s Got The Blues” or Jackson Browne’s version of “The Road” from the classic Running On Empty album. But the story didn’t end in the 70’s. Working with Bob Dylan’s company, Special Rider Music, he co-wrote “Well, Well, Well” with Bob and other songs successfully recorded by artists like Nickel Creek, Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, Alison Krauss, and Alan Jackson, Jesse Colin Young and numerous others over the last thirty plus years. Now, O’Keefe has released his newest recording, Home, made up of new interpretations of his old classics.

jackiegreen_modernlivesvol1 Jackie Greene
The Modern Lives – Vol 1

Hailed as “the Prince of Americana” by the New York Times, Greene has always had a knack for capturing the human experience in all its messy, emotional complexity, and on his new EP, The Modern Lives – Vol 1, he draws inspiration from some of the great social paradoxes of our 21st century world: that the technology designed to simplify our lives can actually complicate them in ways we’d never imagined, that the most crowded cities can actually be the loneliest places to live, that the constructs meant to connect us to each other can actually leave us feeling more isolated than ever.

shelbylynne_allisonmoorer_notdarkyet Shelby Lynne & Allison Moorer
Not Dark yet

Not Dark Yet was recorded in Los Angeles in the summer of 2016. The album provides a potent look at the sisters’ individual and collective artistry through eclectic song choices from writers ranging from the Louvin Brothers, Nick Cave, Kurt Cobain, and back to Jessie Colter. Shelby and Allison wrap their arms around the past, plant their feet in the present, and nod toward what’s around the bend with a co-written Is It Too Much to close out the ten-song set.

More Love

For their fourth album, the California vocal duo of Cindy Wasserman and Frank Lee Drennen have joined forces with producer John Doe—of the legendary band X, with whom they’ve toured numerous times—to create an album that places their achingly beautiful signature vocals and harmonies in finely etched rock, alt-country and pop settings. The sound is both contemporary and timeless. “John brought focus, passion, and experience to the sessions, bringing out a better version of us,” says the duo.

Moonlight Anthems

Formerly known as Major and the Monbacks, Norfolk’s psychedelic rock group Super Doppler released the follow-up to their self-titled album this summer. Produced by fellow Virginia wunderkind Matthew E. White, Moonlight Anthems is a raucous blend of soul, roots, and rock that tips its cap equally to Levon and Lennon, and it finds them building off the wave of critical success garnered by their eponymous 2015 debut.

charlieparr_dog Charlie Parr
Dog

Charlie Parr is a singular songwriter who has built a dedicated, grassroots following for his haunting, topical songs and virtuosic picking, not to mention the fact that he’s on the road 300 days a year. Based in Duluth, Minnesota, Parr’s inspiration is drawn from the alternately fertile and frozen soil of Minnesota; his songs exude a Midwestern sensibility and humility. The combination of growing up with both of his parents working proud union jobs in an industrial meat factory and his largely rural environment had a broad impact on Parr’s writing. His second full album for Red House Records, Dog, is “about folks trying to get along when the atmosphere around them makes it difficult,” Parr says, who was going through hard time in his life when the album was being recorded.

Pile Driver

The Suitcase Junket is Matt Lorenz: artist, tinkerer, swamp yankee, one-man band. His is the road-worn voice rising over the grind of a tube-amped dumpster guitar, and the wild double pitches of throat singing. From Lorenz’ penchant for thrift and ingenuity comes Pile Driver, his full-length Signature Sounds debut of original rock anthems, mountain ballads, blues manifestos and dance-hall festivity.

petercase_onthewaydowntown Peter Case
On The Way Downtown: Live On FolkScene

Peter Case has always been a pioneer. Genre-tripping through punk with The Nerves, new wave/power pop with The Plimsouls, and Americana with his Grammy-nominated, self-titled solo debut. It is a career that is still going strong over 40 years later. This new album captures material from two live performances on the highly influential KPFK syndicated radio program in 1998 and 2000. The first half features material from his then, newly released Full Service, No Waiting. The latter half contains material from 2000’s Flying Saucer Blues, as well as songs from his earlier releases. Plus, some choice covers appear as well. Both intimate acoustic sets have remained unheard since their original broadcasts.
