beatles-sgtpeppers50thanniversary The Beatles
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition

It was 50 years ago when The Beatles’ John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr astonished and delighted the world, ushering in the Summer of Love with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, a groundbreaking masterwork that became popular music’s most universally acclaimed album. The album is newly mixed by Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell in stereo, sourced directly from the four-track masters at Abbey Road Studios in London, and guided by the original, Beatles-preferred mono mix produced by his father, George Martin. This extensive collection gives an unprecedented insight into how The Beatles made their ground-breaking album, including tracks from the Sgt. Pepper sessions that place you in the studio as the group develop the songs.

themavericks-brandnewday The Mavericks
Brand New Day

The 10 songs that make up Brand New Day feature The Mavericks genre-defying style. Case in point, the album opens with the tejano/bluegrass-inspired “Rolling Along”, which sets a tone before the wall-of-sound power of the title track thrusts the listener deep into the musical journey. From the ‘60’s flavored “Easy As It Seems” to the accordion-fueled shuffle of “I Will Be Yours” to the heart-melting beauty of “Goodnight Waltz”, Brand New Day finds the eclectic unit as inspired, passionate and commanding as ever.

raydavies-americana Ray Davies
Americana

Ray Davies’ first new album in 10 years, Americana follows his acclaimed 2013 memoir of the same name, and uses the book as both source material and jumping off point. Recorded in London at Konk Studios, the legendary studio founded by The Kinks in 1973, the album is an autobiographical work, taking inspiration from the vital role America has played in Davies’ life over five decades. It also features a number of short spoken-word passages from the memoir. In Davies’ own words, “America is such a big story, a vast landscape, you can get lost in it. It’s possible in America to go ahead and have a new start somewhere.”

oldcrowmedicineshow-50yearsofblondonblonde Old Crow Medicine Show
50 Years of Blonde on Blonde

This April, Old Crow Medicine Show released their special recording of 50 Years of Blonde on Blonde to celebrate 50 years since the release of Bob Dylan’s iconic album Blonde on Blonde. “Fifty years is a long time for a place like Nashville, Tennessee,” says Ketch Secor, the group’s primary vocalist. “But certain things have accelerated the pace of our city. And certain people have sent the hands of the clock spinning. Bob Dylan is the greatest of these time-bending, paradigm-shifting Nashville cats. By deciding to record his newly found rock n’ roll voice in 1966 Nashville, Bob swung the gates of Country music wide open; so wide, in fact, that 50 years later there was still enough of a crack left for Old Crow Medicine Show to sneak its banjos and fiddles through the gates with string band swagger.”

procolharum-novum Procol Harum
Novum

Novum is Procol Harum’s thirteenth studio album, their first since The Well’s On Fire in 2003, and is released in the band’s fiftieth anniversary year. Kicking things off with the huge and ongoing success of their debut single “A Whiter Shade Of Pale,” Procol Harum went on to help define the progressive rock genre in the early seventies whilst at the same time embracing their roots in blues and soul. Novum sees a new lyrical direction for Procol Harum with the songs all featuring words by Pete Brown, most famous for his song writing collaboration with the members of Cream. This has given a different feel to the songs, retaining the thought provoking content for which the band has always been known but with a different slant and elements of humor.

johnmellencamp-sadclownsandhillbillies John Mellencamp
Sad Clowns & Hillbillies

Sad Clowns & Hillbillies, John Mellencamp’s 23rd full-length album, returns the musician to the musical eclecticism that is, itself, a reflection of his wide-ranging musings on life. Mellencamp provides an authentic voice of American music and masterful storytelling with a commitment to creating traditional rock & roll, bittersweet songs of happiness and melancholia, and fervent political dissent. Mellencamp is joined by Carlene Carter on several of the album’s tracks, as well as Martina McBride, who features on the album’s second single, “Grandview.”

justintownesearle-kidsinthestreet Justin Townes Earle
Kids In The Street

Kids In The Street is the 7th and latest album from American roots troubadour, Justin Townes Earle. After marrying, moving to various corners of the country and continuous touring with both full band and solo, Earle made time to reflect on the past few years and find new clarity. With Kids In The Street, he made a conscious decision to work with a producer for the first time in his now decade-long career. Earle made the trip to Omaha, Nebraska to work with Mike Mogis at ARC Studios. Together, they hand picked musicians to create a new sound and environment for the songs that speaks to Justin’s roots, musically and personally.

rhiannongiddens-freedomhighway Rhiannon Giddens
Freedom Highway

The follow-up to her debut album, Tomorrow Is My Turn, Freedom Highway was co-produced by Giddens with multi-instrumentalist Dirk Powell in his Breaux Bridge, Louisiana studio, with the bulk of recording done in wooden rooms built prior to the Civil War. Together they assembled the players, which included her superb touring band, local musicians from the bayou, a soulful horn section from New York, and talented family members. The result is an album that is rawer and more personal than its predecessor. Giddens says of the album, “These songs are based on slave narratives from the 1800s, African American experiences of the last century, and the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and headlines from streets of Ferguson and Baltimore today. Voices demanding to be heard, to impart the hard-earned wisdom of a tangled, difficult, complicated history; we just try to open the door and let them through.”

pokeylafarge-manicrevelations Pokey Lafarge
Manic Revelations

Pokey LaFarge tries to make sense of trouble he’s seen and trouble he’s been in. This is the Great Why of his unending passion for songwriting. Each chord, each riff shades the stories he sets up in his lyrics, always in search of the purest truth within the ten forlorn, haunting melodies on Manic Revelations. A musician, a storyteller, a narrator of the messy, unkempt American experience… Pokey LaFarge sits, he watches, he writes. Everything that’s worth happening happens in his songs. From the broad social narrative of “Riot In The Streets” to the internal tension of “Must Be A Reason” and “Bad Dreams” to the profound alienation of “Silent Movie,” these Manic Revelations are questions, they are answers, they are an epoch for Pokey LaFarge.

old97s-graveyardwhistling Old 97’s
Graveyard Whistling

For their eleventh studio album, the Old 97’s returned to Village Productions in Tornillo, Texas, where they originally captured the sound from their 1996 album, Too Far To Care. Lead singer Rhett Miller presented a selection of thirty songs to the band, which was whittled down to eleven for the album. “It grapples with spirituality and mortality,” says Miller. “Our songs normally hide deeper meanings in the subtext, but they re more on the surface for this record.”

fatherjohnmisty-purecomedy_150 Father John Misty
Pure Comedy

Father John Misty is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Josh Tillman, and his third album is a complex, often-sardonic, and, equally often, touching meditation on the confounding folly of modern humanity. Tillman describes Pure Comedy as “the story of a species born with a half-formed brain. The species’ only hope for survival, finding itself on a cruel, unpredictable rock surrounded by other species who seem far more adept at this whole thing (and to whom they are delicious), is the reliance on other, slightly older, half-formed brains. This reliance takes on a few different names as their story unfolds, like “love,” “culture,” “family,” etc. Over time, and as their brains prove to be remarkably good at inventing meaning where there is none, the species becomes the purveyor of increasingly bizarre and sophisticated ironies. These ironies are designed to help cope with the species’ loathsome vulnerability and to try and reconcile how disproportionate their imagination is to the monotony of their existence. Something like that.”

willienelson-godsproblemchild Willie Nelson
God’s Problem Child

God’s Problem Child’ is Willie Nelson’s first album to debut all-new songs since Band of Brothers in 2014. It includes 13 new songs, including seven recently written by Willie and Buddy Cannon, his longtime collaborator and producer. The album’s title track, penned by Jamey Johnson and Tony Joe White, includes vocals by both writers and the legendary Leon Russell (on what may be Russell’s very last recording). Closing the album is “He Won’t Ever Be Gone,” a song written by Gary Nicholson that pays tribute to Willie’s outlaw country comrade, Merle Haggard.

treasureofthebrokenland Various Artists
Treasure of the Broken Land: Songs of Mark Heard

“Give me the reasons to go on. Soften the sorrow that shatters and bends, and mend broken dreams.” Singer-songwriter Mark Heard wrote those words in “House of Broken Dreams” on his Dry Bones Dance LP in 1990. There was a prophesy buried within the lines, whether he knew it or not. Heard passed away two years later, in August of 1992, but his words have echoed on in the hearts of all who knew them. And now, with Treasure of the Broken Land: The Songs of Mark Heard, many more hearts can join the chorus while marking the 25th anniversary of his passing. Artists on the album include Rodney Crowell, Drew Holcomb, North Mississippi Allstars, Sierra Hull, and many more.

tajmahalkebmo-tajmo Taj Mahal & Keb’ Mo’
TajMo

TajMo marks a timely convergence of the talents of Taj Mahal and Keb’ Mo’, two unique American artists who’ve already built iconoclastic individual legacies that have extended and expanded blues traditions into adventurous new territory. The collaboration brings out the best in both artists, with the pair merging their distinctive voices, personalities and guitar styles to create vibrant, immediate music that’s firmly rooted in tradition yet ruled by a playful sense of adventure. The album features guest appearances by Sheila E., Joe Walsh, Lizz Wright and Bonnie Raitt, who lends her voice to a distinctive cover of John Mayer’s anthemic “Waiting on the World to Change.”

valeriejune-theorderoftime Valerie June
The Order Of Time

Unfolding like a novella, Verlie June’s sketches detailed, three-dimensional portraits of real people struggling with dreams, defeat, hope and life, in this 12-track song cycle. Musically, the genre-defying singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has redefined herself again, infusing inspirations like Tom Waits, Nina Simone, Leonard Cohen and Fela Kuti into her unique blend of folk, blues, gospel and soul. As in life, a harrowing bite of bitterness can surely be felt in many of these songs and on others; June’s ethereal soundscapes prove the perfect setting for her honeyed, childlike voice as she pleas for simplicity and a better world.

blaenavon-thatsyourlot Blaenavon
That’s Your Lot

The story of Blaenavon’s debut album might be quite easily told: three teenage friends who entered a school talent contest, posted their songs online, and sprawled their way through early gigs, gathering a devoted fanbase and critical acclaim as they went. A band who, after the juggle of exams, EPs, record company attention, have finally delivered a debut album that is sumptuous and thrilling and brave. But it is also a story of a more complicated time, a coming of age of sorts, of 12 intensely personal songs that explore friendship, sadness, hope, love held and lost, and all the confusions of youth in a world that is slowly revealing itself.

bnqt-volume1 BNQT
Volume 1

BNQT, a new collaborative conceived and led by Eric Pulido of Midlake, released their debult album Volume 1 this spring. The introductory set includes ten new, original songs and features five vocalists – Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses, Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, Fran Healy of Travis, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, and Pulido. The concept of BNQT (pronounced “Banquet”) came to Pulido while touring for Midlake’s 2013 release, Antiphon. Gathering a number of contrasting yet complementary artists he’d befriended or shared the stage with, Pulido set out to establish a new creative environment untethered from other work – “Like a poor man’s version of the Traveling Wilburys!” he says.

Robyn Hitchcock

Robyn Hitchcock is the follow up to 2014’s critically acclaimed The Man Upstairs. The new record was recorded in Nashville, Robyn’s new home base in the US, and was produced by Robyn and Brendan Benson (The Raconteurs). This is the first time Robyn has made a full band album in the studio since 2008 and the record features a lot of key players, including Gillian Welch, Emma Swift, Pat Sansone (Wilco, The Autumn Defense), and Grant-Lee Phillips. The psych-rock influence is a callback to his days with The Soft Boys and his early solo albums.

sanfermin-belong San Fermin
Belong

San Fermin’s third studio album, Belong, marks a shift in songwriting perspective for bandleader Ellis Ludwig-Leone. “In the past I’d usually write through characters from books or movies, as a way to try to distance myself from what I was writing about,” says the Brooklyn-based artist. “As I’ve become more confident as a songwriter, I decided that I could drop some of the artifice and write something more direct.” In bringing a more personal slant to his music, Ludwig-Leone found himself confronting such matters as disconnection, displacement, and—perhaps most significantly—everyday anxiety. “Anxiety is something I’ve dealt with since I was a kid, but on this album I talked about it more explicitly than I ever had before,”
